8 SIT: Portable Inspection tool for assessing gap & flush on the car body

2 minute read

Measuring Gap & Flush with triangulation devices ensuring equal performance on different surfaces/materials is not an easy task. Keeping the operator in the measurement loop brings issues as safety, measurement uncertainty and erogonomicity to important level.

This system is a cell-phone based optical triangulation device. It automatically recognizes the measurement area through Deep Learning approaches and, on the basis of this target recognition, it can conditionally switch on/off the laser source and adjust the camera exposure time. These operations ensure safety for the operator and a better balance of measurement uncertainty.

The optimized laser wavelength makes it possible to measure on surfaces/materials of different optical response (metal, plastic, glass, chromed parts, etc.) keeping the same level of accuracy.

The hybrid contact/non-contact operating mode (<40mm target-to-device distance) allows flexibility (essential when a human operator is in the measurement loop) without loss of accuracy, given the possibility to know the target-to-system measurement distance by a dedicated distance sensing device.

The cell-phone based solution eases the operator management of the device, even though the whole system configuration (hardware and software) is designed for easing plug-and-play in automated applications (measurements with robots).

A patent is pending on the device.
